Sorghum, Sudan, Sorghum-Sudan hybrids accumulate both prussic acid and nitrate. High nitrate can cause reduced oxygen in the blood, respiratory distress, abortions or even death. High prussic acid can rapidly cause asphyxiation, seizures, and death. Nitrate (NO3-N) and Prussic Acid (HCN) are unrelated. A safe nitrate concentration does NOT mean a safe prussic acid concentration. Forages should always be tested for both toxic compounds prior to grazing.
